If you know you want to move to a Dallas suburb, you may be flirting with the idea of making Richardson TX your new home. Here are many valid reasons why you may want to do this, not the least of which is that now is the perfect time to move to this growing community home to 121,000.

This landlocked community is surrounded by established suburbs and neighborhoods, with a vital connection to the DART light rail system. This makes for a 20-minute commute to downtown Dallas, which is great if you’re looking to live in a spacious neighborhood and commute to the city for work.

Economic Hub

Richardson, an older suburb, boasts diversity and affordability, sitting between Dallas and the suburb of Plano. It plays host to several major employers, home of the city’s “Telecom Corridor” – where well-known companies such as Verizon Business, DirectTV, Samsung, and Nortel have their headquarters. With more than 5,000 businesses operating within Richardson city limits, Blue Cross Blue Shield is the largest by far, representing the biggest employment base in the insurance industry.

The regional offices for Geico and United Healthcare are located here, as well as one of State Farm’s three regional hubs.

Housing

The city attracts families and couples with many varying budgets, offering everything from starter homes to newer models with all the latest features and amenities. The median home value here is $271,000. The average salary is $70,000, and the most popular career choices here include software engineer, software developer, and senior software engineer.

Growing City

Did you know more than 300 people move to the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex every day, many of them to Richardson? With such a growing population, selecting a city to call home can seem overwhelming at first glance. But when you realize Richardson’s ideal location (just north of downtown Dallas), you will quickly embrace its rich history and lucrative economy.

This inner suburb and principal city of Dallas spans 28 square miles. The University of Dallas is located here, attracting a vibrant college population. This affluent area is just 13 miles away from Dallas and 41 miles from Fort Worth, allowing you to get virtually anywhere in the metroplex fast. Many startups and local businesses have chosen the DFW area as their home base, adding to the number of businesses offering gainful employment.

Long History

Richardson has a rich history that started in the 1840s, when settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee first visited the Richardson area. They farmed the land and grew the city little by little, then a local ginner by the name of William J. Wheeler along with Bernard Reilly donated more than 100 acres to install a railroad. While the community graciously wished to name the city after Wheeler, he humbly refused. The person for whom the town was named isn’t quite clear, but local historians say it was likely Alfred S. Richardson, the secretary of Houston and Texas Central Railroad. With his guidance, the village’s center was moved closer to the railroad.

Dallas Arts District

Richardson combines that small town feel with big city life, a nice blend of arts and culture that attracts young and old. The Dallas Arts District, a nonprofit organization, is the biggest urban arts district in the United States, stretching 19 blocks in the northeast part of downtown Dallas. It has a goal of connecting culture, commerce, residences, churches and schools, resulting in a dynamic, thriving destination for locals and tourists.

Sports

If you love sports, you’ll love living in Richardson because of the close proximity to Dallas – known as a hub for a variety of amateur and professional sporting organizations. Root for the Cowboys at AT&T stadium, the Stars and Mavericks at American Airlines Center, and the Rangers at Globe Life Park. Doesn’t matter which sport you’re into – Richardson puts you in close contact with the best in sports.

Food

As one of the top metroplexes in restaurant growth, the Dallas area boasts more than 13,000 establishments. This means that the food options are plentiful, thanks to a diverse population peppered throughout the metroplex. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love having access to a variety of restaurants offering unique twists on the local cuisine.
