In the 1840s, settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee came to the Richardson area. After farming the land and growing the city, a local ginner named William J. Wheeler and Bernard Reilly donated 101 acres for a railroad. The community wanted to name the city after Wheeler, but he refused. It is not quite determined who the town is named after, but many believe it was after Alfred S. Richardson, the secretary of Houston and Texas Central Railroad who helped shift the village’s center to move closer to the railroad.
